Phelps still has to topple Spitz’s Individual Medal Record of 7 gold medals. He was lucky yesterday not to loose out on the feat despite a faulty pair of shades. Also it is a shame for the Olympics Organizers that they did not invite the former Australian record holder to see his record being toppled by the American. The Annoyed Spitz has now taken a firm stance of not visiting Beijing even if Phelps manages to achieve the feat.

Mark Spitz an Australian? I thought he was an American swimmer.

I want to make an interesting observation here. The Chinese have made the pools three meters deeper than the average Olympic standard pools. This means the shockwaves from the strokes don't affect them in the way it does in other pools. This is helping Phelps to break so many world records. Those behind him also surpassed older records.

Too bad that he doesn't have a true competitor. Ian Thorpe would have made an interesting rival for Phelps if he didn't retire. Maybe Phelps would have still won a few gold medals, but not all. Remember when Thorpe was virtually unchallenged?

How Phelps is the greatest Olympian? Just because he has won more gold medals than others? That is because swimmers have the opportunity to compete in various swimming events. Comparing Phelps to other swimmers is one thing and comparing him to other athletes is unfair.

I read somewhere that he will get a million dollars if he manages to break Mark Spitz's record of most golds in an Olympic. That is so meagre compared to what he is achieving for his country. In India Abhinav Bindra wins a single gold and already money is pouring upon him in tunes of crores of rupees. Can we bribe Phelps to compete for India? :)

This is such a shame. Celebrities are paid many times more just to show up for an event and Michael Phelps the star attraction in the biggest world event gets just a million dollars if he is able to achieve the seemingly impossible feat. Paris Hilton was offered a million dollars for showing up in a pub!
